The Biggles books written by Captain W.E Johns
Who Was Biggles?
'Biggles' was James Bigglesworth, who was the central character in a range of exciting novels written by Captain W.E.Johns.
Biggles was a pilot and had lots of adventures with his close pals, Algy, Bertie and Ginger.
Biggles' adventures spanned several decades and he might be a First World War pilot in one novel, flying a Sopwith Camel and then a member of the CID, flying a Hawker Hunter jet in the 1960s in another novel. Whilst Biggles matured a little through his books, he never really grew any older - lucky devil.
I read the books when I was a lad but more recently, I picked one up at a car boot sale. I clearly enjoyed reading it again as things spiralled a bit and I now have over seventy. As an adult (albeit one who's inner child is never too far away) I still enjoy reading these books, which are fast-paced, exciting and very easy to read.
Not Terribly PC...
Certainly not (there are a few absolute howlers) but one must bear in mind the age of these stories and the prejudices which existed at that time. Biggles has a strong sense of justice though and regardless of race or colour, he will always defend the underdog. A good example is when he puts his life on the line to defend the poor Zinns, a defenceless African tribe who ruthless white men are exploiting.
